FAQs

Method or Tool? What is the difference?

This has always been a tricky question in the community really. A semantic distinction of much debate and discussion. We want this resource to be as representative of your views as a member or visitor to the ‘Service Design Thinking Community’ as possible.

Therefore we’ve provided two upload forms one for uploading descriptions of ‘Service Design Methods’ and the other for ‘Service Design Tools, you can use the one you want or feel is most appropriate. By doing so you’ll be voting with you feet, as it were and by the time the submissions are all in, we’ll have an idea of which is the most popular distinction.

If you want to contribute to the discussion on the difference between the two terms please tweet us @This_Is_SDT or use the comment form below!

So how do I upload a ‘tool’ or ‘method’?

We’ve tried to make this as easy as possible really. Simply click on either the ‘Submit a Method’ or ‘Submit a Tool’ link on the menu at the top of the page.

This will take you to a simple for interface where you register on the site if you haven’t already, then enter the title and description of the tool or the method. There is also the possibility to upload an illustrative image to support the description – whatever you think will be the best way to communicate it really.

The only thing we ask is that you keep the method as short as possible, perhaps by using bullet points and simple instructions in short sentences and paragraphs. The better you can break up the method into short ‘bite-size’ chunks the easier it will be for others from all over the world to understand and review.

What happens after I’ve uploaded?

After you have uploaded the methods you will be able to find it again by clicking the link ‘Methods and Tools’ at the top of the page. This page will contain links to all the other methods and tools uploaded so far.

Clicking on one of the titles of the listed methods or tools will allow you to read and review the method as well as comment on each of the bullet points or paragraphs. It is our hope by allowing people to comment on and ‘crowdsource’ all of our tools and methods in this way that we will be able to refine them to make them as understandable as possible. We also hope that this way the end list of tools will be as representative of the contributing community as possible!

did somebody already post on cultural probes, context mapping, user involvement sessions?

btw. I can’t see the difference clearly between posted tools and methods…

How will you edit the methods and tools chapter? Will you publish everything that is submitted?

No, we are thinking of a co-creative review process. Probably we’ll set up a UsersVoice page for this in February. Also to gain feedback, if we are missing important tools and methods.
